Let’s Fold Origami Hearts

I try to keep up with using the pretty Designer Series Papers (DSP) in my craft room. And, I also have a little pencil tree which is the perfect size to display my paper crafts. In the past, I’ve used this little tree to display greeting cards, gift tags, paper baubles, rosettes, you name it. Because Valentine’s Day is approaching, I decided to make some origami hearts to help me use my paper. While looking in my origami books, I found a couple of different ways to make hearts. So, let’s fold origami hearts!

Origami Heart Folds

The origami books I own have two different styles of folded hearts. I began to fold each style with a 6″ x 6″ piece of DSP. You can see, one style of heart ends up smaller than the other when the folds are completed. In order to obtain the heart shapes, corners must be folded behind and are loose, so I didn’t feel they were the best to hang, after all. Also, the smaller heart is much bulkier in thickness than the larger one, and again a bit too difficult to hang. As a result the larger hearts were a bit overwhelming for my little pencil tree, size-wise. Because of these reasons, I felt maybe these hearts were better suited for cards.

I mixed and matched current and retired stamps, DSP pieces, ribbons, Paper Pumpkin kit leftovers and embellishments to create cards. Here are some examples.

Below are a few more cards.

These cards are bulky, I will not lie. I used a lot of glue dots and tear’n tape to make the hearts stick. Some of the cards could be mailed, but are more suited to being tucked with a gift box or gift bag.

Origami Heart Pockets

While assembling these cards, I noticed that the large hearts formed a natural pocket. And as a result, this makes a great place to tuck a gift card or a hidden message into!

More Paper Hearts

So, back to the drawing board! My next idea for making paper hearts involves punches. I punched hearts from the Country Gingham DSP with the Heart Punch Pack. The variety of six designs from the paper and two heart punches gave me 12 different hearts that were the perfect size and amount for my little tree. Another good thing about these hearts is I can take the hearts off the tree and use them for other projects after Valentine’s Day!

Heart Project Supplies

Not all the supplies used are currently available to purchase, but you can select the items from the list to view and learn about those that are.
